What the job involves

What garage door roller replacement involves

Garage door roller replacement means taking the worn wheels out of the hinges and fitting new ones, so the door rides smoothly in the track again. Rollers are the small wheels on each side of every panel that run inside the vertical and horizontal tracks. A sectional door usually has a roller at each hinge, and each one turns every time the door goes up or down.

Rollers wear out with use. Steel rollers lose their bearings and go rough, nylon rollers flatten or crack, and dry or dirty bearings seize. The signs are a grinding or rattling noise, a door that shakes or jerks as it travels, a door that jumps in the track, and rollers that wobble loosely in the track. In Newark, road salt and winter moisture carried into the garage speed that up. A door with failing rollers puts extra strain on the opener, so the problem gets worse the longer it runs.

Our inspection

What we check and what you can choose

Roller type

Steel rollers are the loudest option. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run much quieter, and that is the usual choice for a door under a bedroom or beside a living space.

Stem length and track size

Rollers have to match the track width, commonly 2 inch or 3 inch, and the hinge stem length. The wrong size wobbles, binds or jumps out of the track.

Hinges

A worn roller stem often wears the hinge hole too. We check the hinges while the rollers are out and replace any that are bent, cracked or loose.

Track condition

Rollers that have been jumping can leave dents or bends in the track. We check that the track is straight and clean, and that the curve at the top is smooth.

Replace all or only some

Rollers wear at about the same rate, so when one has failed the others are close behind. We usually recommend replacing the whole set at one visit.

How it works

How a roller replacement goes

  1. 01

You call and tell us what you hear

Grinding, squealing, shaking or a door that drifts to one side: describe it and we will tell you if rollers are the likely cause.

  2. 02

We come out and check the door

Our uniformed technician inspects the rollers, hinges and track, and looks at the springs and cables, since they wear on the same schedule.

  3. 03

We explain what we found and the price

We show you the worn parts and the roller options. You get an upfront quote before any work begins.

  4. 04

    We fit the new rollers

We swap the rollers panel by panel and leave the bottom rollers for last, since their brackets sit under cable tension and are handled with the right tools. We then lubricate and test the door. A set of rollers is usually done in one visit.

A rough, noisy door is rarely going to quiet down on its own.

Tell us how it sounds and we will tell you whether new rollers are the fix.

Questions

Garage door roller questions

How do I know the rollers are the problem?
Worn rollers cause a grinding or rattling noise, a shaky ride and a door that jumps in the track. Look at the wheels with the door down: a roller that wobbles, looks flat or has a cracked rim is worn. If the noise comes from the motor or a pop comes from overhead, the cause is likely the spring instead.
Can I replace garage door rollers myself?
The middle rollers can be swapped by an experienced person, but the bottom rollers sit in brackets under heavy cable tension that can injure you if released. For that reason we do the full set and handle the bottom brackets with the proper tools.
Are nylon rollers better than steel?
For a quiet door, yes. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run smoother and make less noise than steel ones, and do not need to be lubricated as often. Steel rollers are stronger, and some doors use them. We explain the options for your door before we start.
Will new rollers fix a noisy opener?
Sometimes. If the noise comes from the door in the track, new rollers will quiet it. If it comes from the chain, belt or motor, the opener is the issue, and opener repair is the right call.
What affects the cost of replacing rollers?
The price depends on how many rollers the door has, the type you choose, and whether hinges or track need work as well. A larger or heavier door has more hinges and takes more parts. We give an upfront quote before any work begins.
How long does the job take?
Replacing a full set of rollers on a standard residential door is usually done in one visit. If the track is bent or hinges are damaged, the visit takes longer.
Is it safe to keep using the door with bad rollers?
Only sparingly. A roller that breaks can let the panel come out of the track, and the door can tilt or jam. Use it as little as possible, and stop if it starts to jump or lean. Call us before it comes off the track.
