What the job involves

What garage door opener installation includes

A garage door opener installation replaces the motor unit, the rail or belt, the trolley, the wall control and the safety sensors. The opener sits on a bracket above the door and pulls it along the track, but it does not carry the weight. The springs do that. So before we mount anything, we check that the door is balanced, because a motor fighting an out-of-balance door burns out early.

Openers come in three common drives. Chain drive is sturdy and a fair choice for a detached garage. Belt drive runs much quieter, which matters when there is a bedroom over the garage. Screw drive has few moving parts. Horsepower, drive type and lift capacity all depend on the door, so we match the motor to the door weight and size instead of selling one model for every opening. If the door itself is worn, a door replacement can be planned in the same visit.

Our setup

What we check and set up

Door balance

We lift the door by hand with the old opener disconnected. If it does not stay put halfway, the springs need attention before a new motor goes on.

Motor and drive type

Chain, belt or screw, and the right power for the weight of your door. A heavier insulated door needs more lift than a light single-layer one.

Safety sensors

Photo-eye sensors are mounted a few inches off the floor on both sides of the opening. The UL 325 safety standard requires residential openers to include entrapment protection, and we test it on every install.

Travel and force settings

We set how far the door opens and closes and how much force it uses, so it stops and reverses when it meets an obstruction.

Remotes, keypad and wall control

We program the handheld remotes and any outside keypad, and mount the wall control within reach and out of reach of small children.

Wiring and power

The opener plugs into a grounded ceiling outlet. We check that one is within reach of the motor, and tell you if an outlet needs adding.

How it works

How an opener installation goes

  1. 01

You tell us what you have

Say what the door is, how old the opener is, and what it does or does not do. Brand and model help, but are not required.

  2. 02

We come out and look at the door

A uniformed technician checks the door balance, the springs, the tracks and the header, then goes over the drive types that suit the opening.

  3. 03

We explain the price before any work

You get an upfront quote before any work begins, so you know the full cost of the opener and installation before we remove the old one.

  4. 04

    We install, set and test

We mount the new unit, wire the sensors, set the limits and force, program the remotes, and run the door through several cycles before we leave.

Opener grinding, jerking or going nowhere?

Tell us how it behaves and we'll tell you whether it needs replacing or whether the problem is really the door.

Questions

Questions about opener installation in Newark

How do I know I need a new opener and not a repair?
If the motor runs but the door will not move, the problem is often a stripped gear or a broken spring, not the whole unit. If the opener is loud, slow, loses its settings or has no working sensors, replacement is usually the better value. We check the door first, because a broken spring will make a good opener look faulty.
Can the new opener use my existing door and tracks?
Almost always, as long as the door is balanced and the tracks are straight and secure. The opener is mounted to the header wall and ceiling, not to the door itself, apart from a bracket at the top panel.
What does an opener installation cost?
The price depends on the drive type, the motor power, the accessories such as keypads or backup battery, and whether the door needs work before the opener goes on. We give you an upfront quote before any work begins, and we go through it in plain words.
How long does the installation take?
A standard replacement on a balanced door is normally finished in one visit. A door that needs spring or track work first will take longer, and we tell you that when we quote.
Will a new opener still work if the power goes out?
Every opener has a red release cord that disconnects the door so you can lift it by hand. Some models also take a backup battery, which we can go over with you during the visit.
Is the work covered?
Yes. Repairs and installations are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty. We are also licensed and insured, and the technician explains the problem before starting.
What should I do if the door will not open until the opener is replaced?
Pull the red release cord, keep people clear, and lift the door only if it feels balanced and light. If it feels heavy or one side lifts crooked, leave it alone and call us, because that points to a spring or cable problem.
