What the job involves
When a single panel is the right fix
Garage door panel replacement means taking out one damaged panel of a sectional door and fitting a new one, keeping the rest of the door, the track and the opener. It makes sense when the damage is limited to one or two panels and the rest of the door is sound. Typical causes are a car bumper backing into the bottom panel, a basketball or snow shovel through a thin steel skin, a crack from cold on an old composite or wood panel, and a panel that has bowed after years of strain on one side.
In Newark, the bottom panel takes the worst of it. Narrow driveways and tight garages are how bumpers meet doors in the older parts of the city, and winter road salt and wet snow rust the lower edge of steel panels faster than any other part of the door. A panel that is rusted through at the bottom can be replaced as long as a matching one is available, and that is the first thing we find out.
Our inspection
What we check before we order a panel
Can the panel be matched
We note the door's make, model, panel height, width, thickness and the pattern pressed into the face. A panel has to fit the hinges and stack evenly with the ones that stay, so a close match is not enough.
Is the damage just the one panel
A hit hard enough to dent a panel often bends the track or cracks a hinge as well. We check the neighboring panels, hinges, struts and track before we call it a panel job.
Color and finish
A new panel on an older door can look different from the others because paint fades with sun and weather. We tell you in advance how closely it will match and what painting would involve.
Panel type and insulation
Steel, insulated steel, wood and composite panels are built differently. An insulated panel has to be replaced with an insulated one so the door stays balanced.
Weight and balance
A new panel changes the weight of the door slightly. We rebalance the springs afterward so the door lifts evenly and the opener does not carry extra load.
How it works
How a panel replacement goes
-
01
You call and tell us what happened
Describe the damage and what is printed on the door's label if you can see one. We will tell you whether a single panel is likely to be possible.
-
02
We come out and look at the whole door
Our uniformed technician measures the panel, identifies the door and checks the hinges, track, springs and cables around the damage.
-
03
We explain the fix and the price
We tell you whether a panel will fit, or whether the door is too far gone or too old to match. You get an upfront quote before any work begins.
-
04
We fit the new panel
We take the damaged panel out, fit the new one with the hinges and struts, rebalance the door and test it through a full run. A straightforward panel swap is usually done in one visit once the panel is in hand.
A dented or cracked panel does not have to mean a new door.
Tell us what hit it and we will say whether a single panel will do the job.
